A work of art is open to the interpretation of its viewers. To some, Miindo or Portrait of a Beauty is soft porn but to others it is a great Korean period film. I’m kind of staying in the middle. I didn’t find it spectacular yet it kept me interested, not by the boobies on the screen but with the storyline itself.

Shin Yoon-bok (Kim Min-seon) is a painter in the king’s court. During those times, ladies are not allowed to paint so she had to keep her true identity a secret. She’s an apprentice of master painter Kim Hong-do (Kim Yeong-ho). Everything seems to be in order until she meets and falls in love with Kang-moo (Kim Nam-gil).
While doing some research, I learned that there really was a painter named Shin Yoon-bok during the 18th century. He was known for painting realistic depictions of everyday life. He was said to be expelled from the royal painting institute for the erotic themes of his paintings. He was definitely a man and this is one of the points that scholars are against with regards to the Portrait of a Beauty.
Kim Hong-do (Kim Yeong-ho): People see obscenity in a picture because their minds are soiled by obscene thoughts.
It’s the director’s subliminal way of saying that the sex scenes in Portrait of a Beauty are not dirty and necessary to completely show the characters’ development. I must say that the erotic scenes were done tastefully and didn’t seem vulgar at all. But there were some scenes that could’ve been cut or shortened. Case in point is the Chinese Kama Sutra scene, which in my opinion could have been taken out of the movie without destroying its production value.
Buried under all the sexual tension of the Portrait of a Beauty is a sweet yet tragic love story. It’s like the stars don’t want the relationship to work at all. We find out that Hong-do was secretly in love with his pupil. This is the reason why he took her under his care in the first place. In the end, Yoon-bok and Kang-moo died because of their love. Kang-do was killed by Hang-do’s poisoned arrow. Even though her master was the one who killed Kang-moo, she confessed the crime and was given the death penalty.
Portrait of a Beauty is something that should be enjoyed once but watching it twice would be torture. It’s a nice movie that accurately depicted human nature in all its form. It might be a period movie but its concept of true love still remains the same. Just like Shin Yoon-bok, you’ll do anything and everything for the one you love.
